Now, the journey to discovering these methods was not an EASY (or short) one…

Although, an fascinating one, for sure.

And you might even see some similarities with your own, including some of the same desires and questions about life.

While it began well before this, it was this pivotal moment that set a lot in motion…

I was in my first year of college studying physics (and all those boring “pre-requisite” classes that contribute very little to the real reason I went to college)

I had just started picked up two spiritual books that piqued my curiosity about meditation, yoga, and spiritual growth. So, naturally, I wanted to give it a try.

Up to this point, I knew very little about meditation…

But, I was inspired by what I had read. These books seemed to have “woken up” a deep sense of curiosity and wonder about the possibilities of living a more fulfilling life.

After reading them, that is what I desired even more.

Of course, I wanted to earn some money, have great a relationship, and do awesome stuff like travel and check off “adventures” from my bucket list…

But, I also felt that if I worked hard and modeled other successful people, all “that stuff” would come in due time.

What didn’t feel like a “given”… and what wasn’t entirely clear…

Was how I was going to experience a perception of life and reality beyond the material achievements. Up to this point, I’d only heard “mystical gossip” and Hollywood-Style stories of these dimensions of life that only special human beings seemed know about.

And, I also felt that if I became more spiritually connected, I’d be better equip to achieve all my goals and dreams.

After all, a lot of folks who have had ‘worldly success’ also talk a lot about spirituality… so I knew there had to be something to it.

I knew that life wouldn’t be truly fulfilling, no matter how much money I earned or how many friends I made along the way, if I didn’t know (and find a way to directly experience) the inner realities of myself and what this life is all about.

Only Problem Was…

None of those books had any guidance about where to start or even how to meditate, and finding some quiet time to focus was difficult in our active house.

So, there I was, feeling that I was onto something, but totally clueless as to where to begin. Not feeling very confident in who’s instructions I should follow or if they’ll even work for me…

Actually, I was even more confused because it seemed like I was now dipping into a totally foreign aspect of life that I hadn’t known much about until then.

I thought that if I could just find a quiet place to sit and focused REALLY hard, I’d burst into some incredible mystical experience and become an enlightened.

To my dismay, over the years that followed, whenever I sat to try out this “meditation thing” I never burst into any mystical experience.

Actually, quite the opposite. It seemed that my mind became even more restless… The thoughts got louder and I couldn’t concentrate very easily.

These very brief mediation attempts continued for years. In the meantime, I was studying different spiritual books and gradually discovering hints and little nuggets of wisdom that inspired me to continue on…

Once in a while I’d have a little epiphany, but never a total transformation or extraordinary realization… Until…

I Experienced Something Beyond Anything That I’d Ever Encountered Before…

Until that moment, I had only read stories of Yogis and Mystics who had these sorts of experiences.

Some call it a moment of oneness. Some call it an “out of body experience” (beyond the body and the mind). Some have even labelled it as an indescribable bliss, pure consciousness, and existence.

This sort of experience stays within you forever… but while it might sound like a tremendous moment of SUCCESS or even a moment of enlightenment… It wasn’t…

Not for me at least. I have no idea how long it lasted (minutes? hours?), but it wasn’t permanent.

It came. I saw what was possible… but then it was gone. How could it be? Was it real? Did I just imagine it? No way… My imagination couldn’t create something like that. I had to know how to re-visit this sort of experience…

So, The Seeking Intensified…

And among the 1000’s of questions that came, there were a few that guided (and continue to guide) my quest for developing, enhancing, and intensifying a spiritual practice that is actually meaningful and effective.

I wondered… How do I make this happen, consciously? How do I live with this perception, continuously? How do I experience this vivid clarity, always?

I hit a peak… then I hit a wall.

It was bliss… then it was wonder… then a bit of confusion…

I had realized, this experience was a gift, but it was NOT earned through the type of self-effort that is necessary. (this is THE key to success in any endeavor)

But, that’s when I had an epiphany…

“I MUST learn how to meditate.”

And not just for more “peacefulness” or to “quite my mind” or to “have more control over my mind and senses”…

These were merely the prerequisites to something much more important…

I had to learn how to meditate because there was something BEYOND all of that – a dimension of perception that few human beings ever attain to. 

This was my NEW goal.

So, I started seeking; studying book after book, listening to 1000’s of hours of lectures, talks, and satsanga (special gatherings listening to a master share his or her wisdom).

I knew that if I listened to the teachings of these great masters, did the proper Yoga practices that purify the mind, body, and energies and meditated each day…

I’d be on the right track…

And eventually I’d be able to attain these experiences again.

So, each and every day I reflected upon these teachings and integrated them into my mind and personality.

I started doing some hatha yoga.

I even attempted to mediate a little more…

But, something was missing.

It all felt very disconnected; ironically.

There were gurus talking about THEIR way as the only way, and then others talking down about that “way” as inferior… and instead you do it “this way…”

Even though I wanted to meditate, and had studied all these different books and practices and even had little moments of consistency for a few weeks, I couldn’t make it work for me.

I didn’t know what I was doing or if it was even the “right way” of progressing…

I was learning and doing all these disconnected practices… all promising results and often times down-playing the other programs and practices

It wasn’t making sense.

The thought was always there… “Is this really the BEST way to accomplish my goal?”

All of them promising enlightenment or self-realization which came with these incredible stories of accomplished Yogis and Realized Beings who had awoken to the secrets of the universe, and to all life within themselves.

After several years of trying to figure this out, and a few initiations into various practices, I was fortunate enough to, not only meet with a realized master and guru of tremendous wisdom and radiant humor, but to also have a private meetings & conversations with him.

Nestled into his sweet ashram oasis, in the midst of the bustling, wild city of Miami, lives this great master, Swami Jyotirmayananda.

And through his wisdom I was presented with the MISSING KEY to integrating all of these practices together.

I finally understood why I wasn’t able to successfully excel my spiritual pursuits.

I hadn’t made the connection.

I was seeing everything as separate practices attempting to go towards the same goal…

But, the conflict would always arise in my mind…

“Is this the fastest or the best way? Or should I be doing more of the other ones?”

Now…

With the deeper understanding of how to integrate all of these methods and techniques together I was able to experience the “fruit of my efforts.”

And this is how Integral Sadhana came to be.

Sadhana is a specific spiritual practice; although in India it is often also used for all sorts of disciplines with the intention of attaining some form of mastery.

Integral Sadhana is the harmonic blend of all of these the various Yogic paths (as well as others from other spiritual practices I’ve learned along the way) to create a rich, alive spiritual process.

Separately, these processes create wellbeing of all sorts…
